Originating from walks in Jericho Beach Park, and referencing the Gaelic word Aberthau - 'filled with light' the threesome embarked on a project to evoke elements, seasons, cycles and transformation through music, movement and light. Incorporating sound samples from various sources and nature in the park for a workshop in February, Phil completed an original score and composition to accompany the final group project and performance on March 15, 2014.
The merging of disciplines in this creative effort resonated with audience members profoundly, as the artists engaged in a Q+A session after the final performance, where all three spoke of their work and process. One such response to the work:
"Having just seen the world famous Kokoro Butoh dance company the night before (part of the Vancouver Dance Festival) we were open to the performance, but wondering if it might be overly conceptual and difficult to understand. But the artist collective presented "Filled with Light", a performance piece which literally moved me to tears. It was lyrical, elegant and intelligent -- a sensitive exploration of light and sound and movement. And after the experience of the performance, we were allowed to chat with the artists. Hearing about their process was riveting. Thank you so very much for helping to make this happen!"
