As we transition from Thanksgiving to the end of Autumn, we had the pleasure of welcoming Canadian Veteran Yuri Miljevic-Larouche to the West Point Grey Community Centre Pre-School and University Hills Elementary School to meet with students and talk about Remembrance Day. During the visit with the fifth grade class of teacher Janet Logie at University Hills Elementary School, Yuri spoke to the children about his experience as a Peace Keeper in Bosnia, and as a fighting soldier during the war in Afghanistan. The children had many pointed questions that brought pause and reflection. Afterwards, whilst planting seeds, one student recited the Flanders Poem in Remembrance of Yuri's best friend "Tom" who lost his life in Afghanistan. At Aberthau, the pre-schoolers were escorted to the garden as Brian Jones, Wheat Weaver Artist and musician at Aberthau played his accordion. The pre-schoolers really enjoyed the visit and had some insightful questions for Yuri. It was so wonderful to hear the students ask questions. They were so intelligent, compassionate and respectful! And we all planted Flanders Poppies for Spring Blooms. Below, please view the short video produced by Mayne Brand Productions, Vancouver, BC.
